From a photo I took after we visited the Colosseum in June. 12"x12", oil on canvas. I roughed in the basic shapes on a white ground, scraped it down, and went back in. The second pass left it too low contrast for my taste-I preferred the Diebenkorn feeling of the rough so I went back in with some higher values. I wanted to have a try at that moment, the Collosuem just a spall part of big Rome, spread out before us on a bright sunny day.
Traveling in Rome with my family. This is a view from the roof of our apartment (near the Campo do Fiori). Made in hast yesterday evening-I tried for the general shapes, colors and values. The many rooftop gardens account for all that green. Wide format sketchbook: 15x30cm.
All week the forsythia has been catching my eye; the grey days making a perfect foil for that incomparable yellow. It is so satisfying to have a moment now, riding the megabus to NYC- and then on to Morocco!-to sketch it.
-Elizabeth and I will be posting sketches here (http://moveablepaintbox.wordpress.com/)
