Large under-paintings, rough beginnings that I hope to develop over time. All of these compositions are the fruit of a new kind of picture making for me. I am using a wider variety of reference material rather than painting the still life in front of me or working from one or even a few photographs of the same perspective and the same subject matter. It is very exciting to me. A few weeks ago I attempted to describe it here. Earlier this year I heard Julie Heffernan speak. Her energy was contagious as she spoke of letting the painting lead her, finding out as she goes and "painting in order to go someplace you didn't expect".
From a model session yesterday at the studio of artist Amy Wynne-Derry. You can read an article about Amy here and see an aspect of her work. It was a charmed afternoon: being holed up for 5 hours with a bunch of artists and models, I kept wondering if this could really be my own good fortune. The time went by in a blink.
