This is a painting of the interior of a beautiful restaurant on the lively Rue Riad Zitoun el Kedim (the old olive road, not to be confused with the new olive road, parallel, Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid) in Marrakech. One afternoon last week (after a bit of sketching in the street) I found that I was tired, thirsty and not engaged for another hour. A beautiful doorway caught my eye and I asked the nicely dressed man standing next to it what lay inside. He led me into a cool, lavish, domed interior and up an elaborately tiled staircase for a cup of mint tea. It was an intense contrast from the dusty, crowded streets below.
